9 Places to Add Pinterest Keywords to Help you Show Up in Search

In this blog, I am going to outline where to add Pinterest Keywords to help your Pinterest Profile and Pins get found in search. Keep in mind, it's also important to use your keywords throughout your website and all content related to your business. This blog is primarily about where to add your Pinterest Keywords on Pinterest.

What are Pinterest Keywords? Or Pinterest SEO Keywords?

Keywords or SEO (search engine optimization) keywords are the words and phrases used on a website, blog, shop, or on Pinterest that make it possible for people to find relevant content when using search engines (Pinterest, Google).

Websites, blog posts, product descriptions, Pinterest Accounts, and Pins that are well optimized for search with keywords will be more easily and often found when someone is searching for that item.

It is important that you do your Pinterest keywords research so that you know what words and phrases searchers are using to find what you are offering (your coaching services, your physical products, your digital products, your courses, whatever it is). Knowing the top Pinterest keywords for your offers and products and using them in the places I talk about here will help your overall ranking in searches. (Meaning, when someone searches, you come up near the top where people are most likely to see your Pin.)

Why do you need to use Keywords?

Pinterest is a search engine. Some call it a search and discovery platform. Users go to Pinterest searching for solutions to a problem, to plan a project, to find answers to questions, and to search for products to purchase.

Users enter their search words in the search bar and Pinterest delivers Pins that represent the solutions they are looking for. These search words are your keywords. They are the words and phrases people are using to find the answers to what they are looking for. As a business, you want to use the words they are using (your keywords) in your content, on your Pinterest account and pins, so that you show up with your solution or offer when they are looking.

This blog is going to describe 9 places to add your Pinterest Keywords to optimize your chance of being found in search.

Add Pinterest Keywords to Your Pinterest Profile

Your Pinterest Profile should inform viewers (and the Pinterest Algorithm) what your business is about and what you offer. Try to carefully and naturally weave in keywords that will help searchers find you.

Pinterest Account Name

When deciding on your Account Name, add Keywords. So for me, I may be Cathy Heflin | Pinterest Marketing Expert. This tells Pinterest and viewers who I am and what I do using my keyword phrase Pinterest Marketing. (FYI, I am not referring to your username necessarily but that wouldn't hurt, it's just harder)

Pinterest Account Description

Create an Account Description that accurately describes what you do while naturally weaving in keywords. Mine may say: >> Pinterest Marketing Expert | Helping businesses grow their audience and sales with Pinterest Marketing for business | Pinterest for Beginners | Pinterest Ads <<. You can see how I added the keywords I want to be found in search for while making it readable and clear.

Add Pinterest Keywords to your Pinterest Boards

Board Titles

Your account will include relevant boards for your content. The names or titles of those boards should be easy to understand, clear, and should include relevant keywords. While fun, cute names may seem appealing when you are creating your titles, I suggest something more straightforward. Remember, Pinterest is attempting to match you and your content to searchers who need what you offer. You want to be sure it is clear to the search engine what can be found in the board.

Board Description

Once you have added a board to your account, fill in the description with a clear explanation of what can be found inside of the board. I usually start out with a couple of sentences to explain the board and then include a listing of various keywords and keyword phrases to fill out the descriptions. Always fill in your description, don’t leave empty space. This is another area where Pinterest is looking to understand what your account and board are about so they can send searchers your way.

Add Pinterest Keywords to your Pins

There are several ways to add keywords to your Pinterest Pins.

Text Overlay

As you create your pin graphics, if you are including text overlay, it’s the perfect place to add your keywords. Text Overlay is the text or title you put right on your pin image. The text you use on your pins should be clear and easy to understand. Not only are viewers seeing your Pin text overlay, BUT, Pinterest is also reading the text. Including your Pinterest Keywords will allow Pinterest to better understand who to show your pin to.

Pin Title

The Pin Title is one of the first things viewers see. It is the perfect place to include keywords. The Pin Title also helps Pinterest understand your pin better. Being consistent and clear helps Pinterest and viewers understand what they will get when they click on your pin. Vary your keyword-rich titles on different pins so that you can use several versions of your keywords.

Pin Description

The Pin Description is another place to include information about your pin and what people will get when they click. Use keywords in your description as well. This will help viewers understand your content but will also help Pinterest direct people to your Pin.

Add Pinterest Keywords to your Alt Text

When you are adding a Pin to Pinterest you have the opportunity to add Alt Text. This space is used to describe the Pin image and content for anyone using a screen reader. This is a place where you can carefully weave in your Pinterest Keywords. Just be sure that the text makes sense. Do not keyword stuff and overuse your keywords in a way that makes the description seem confusing. You want the Alt Text to be a clear and easy-to-understand description for the user.

Add Pinterest Keywords to the Image Name on your Website

When you create pins for your blog, products, services, etc. I encourage you to add an optimized Pin image to the page on your website (you can see I have added several here and I encourage you to Pin it for later to one of your boards). This gives anyone who is viewing your content on your website, the opportunity to save the Pin on their Pinterest account for later. When you add this image to your website, name that image using your Pinterest keywords. (Hint, this will help that image show up on Google as well).

Keyword Research

There are multiple ways to find Pinterest Keywords. For tips for How to do Keyword Research and find your Pinterest keywords, head over to this blog: How to Research Keywords for Pinterest. The blog outlines keyword research techniques that make finding Pinterest keywords easy.

Conclusion

Start researching and using your keywords on Pinterest. It will help your Pins and content be found when searchers are looking for what you are offering.
